An Urban Escape, Wuhan China
Nestled along the backs of the Yangtze and Han Rivers, Wuhan celebrates a hidden gem within the city: the "Where the River Runs" park. The project is robust in serene landscapes and cultural richness while providing a breath of fresh air in a bustling city. The waterfront haven explores the symbiotic relationship between nature and urban life providing an escape while praising the city for what it is.
The concept for such a unique project is that of a river. The site was built and carved to create a river canyon that cuts through different types of terrain and topography. Many different types of micro-landforms are created in the project like grasslands, low wide riverbeds, overhead landscapes and caves, and high narrow cliffs.

The park itself is a testament to Wuhan's commitment to preserving its natural heritage while praising urban life for what it is. The park stretches along the waterfront and offers a blend of lush greenery, cultural elements, and recreational spaces. The meandering path brings a tranquil feeling to the city that is a harsh contrast to the city's hustle and bustle.
"Where the River Runs" is also an educational tool for the citizens of Wuhan. It teaches the value of the non-renewable, heavily relied upon resource: water. The whole park pays homage to what the Yangtze and Han rivers did for the city: supplying fertile lands, fresh water, and ways of transportation to their ancestors. It is clear that Wuhan cares deeply about their cultural heritage and respects the land for what it has done for them and their ancestors. Sculptures and pavilions along the winding paths further celebrate the city's history and share artistic spirit.
The community is further engaged in the project and park with the key feature of the interactive planters along the pathways of the park. Visitors are encouraged to leave their seeds along the "river bank" as they flow through the park. The planters then are full of diverse flowers and plants creating an oasis of community involvement. Education on watershed management is also a key factor in the project. All water that falls on the project is collected and reused to maintain the flora of "Where the River Runs".
Throughout the year, "Where the River Runs" comes to life with events and festivals. From modern cultural gatherings to traditional celebrations, the park serves as a communal space where residents and visitors can come together to celebrate, learn, and connect. This project isn't just a park, it is a symbol of Wuhan and their culture.
